Lunch at Guu SakaBar

Guu (@GuuIzakaya) fans rejoice!
You can now get your Guu fix at lunch, Monday to Friday, from 11:30am to 2:00pm!

I made my way to Guu Sakabar (Facebook: Guu SakaBar) with a friend last week to check out their lunch menu. The first thing I noticed when I got there was that unlike dinner time, there were no crazy lineups *yay!* and secondly, the entire restaurant was beautifully decorated with hanging lanterns, and red, pink and white paper blossoms. So pretty.

Even the maneki-neko was sporting a pink hat! I soon realized that all this was in celebration of Guu Sakabar's two year anniversary.

My friend and I sat near the back of the restaurant, right in front of these giant sake barrels.

New Menu at West50 Pourhouse

The first time I was at West50 Pourhouse & Grille (read post here) I was stunned by its massive selection of beer (over 100 different beers and taps) and was rendered speechless after realizing that West50 Pourhouse (Twitter: @West50Pourhouse, Facebook: West50 Pourhouse & Grille) is actually the biggest pourhouse (i.e. has the largest selection of draught beerin Canada. I was so impressed. I was then rendered speechless again, literally, from the pure act of stuffing my face with a very tasty, very delectable eight-course dinner (with beer pairings of course.) It was good times. Fast forward nine months later a.k.a. two nights ago, I was back at West50 again to try their new menu. Sheesh! Time flies! So cliche, but so true!

Anyway.

First things first - once I sat down, I knew I had to choose a beer. SO MANY OPTIONS! I admit it, I'm a complete wimp when it comes to beer. I like the fruity stuff! So when our server came over and asked me what I wanted, I naturally said Fruli. She then recommended Liefmans on the rocks (Liefmans is a fresh beer blend with natural juices from cherry, bilberry, elderberry strawberry and and raspberry...honestly, can beer get any fruitier?!) She told me she personally prefers Liefmans over Fruli. After hearing that, I was sold. And guess what? I'm so glad I tried it! Liefmans Fruitesse on the rocks is now my new favourite beer :) It's pleasantly sweet and refreshing...like apple cider...but cherry? I'm also in love with that tumbler.

Beer. Check.
Next up: food.

asked chef Brendan Prong (@chef_prongif there was anything that inspired his new menu:

"My inspiration behind this menu was to return to my roots, trying to step away from global con-"fusion" cuisine and back to continental comfort. A lot of the dishes are personal favourites for me and my staff. We worked together to find a happy medium of bar food and upscale comfort. I was very inspired by my ingredients on this menu, I made some major changes in my purveyors and taught myself new techniques, allowing for a more fresh, ingredient-driven menu. The beer bistro concept is hot right now and I want to bring us to the top of that game even if we are far west of the "buzz". With Canada's largest selection of draught beer inside my restaurant I feel I really need to step up my game, and this is just a start."

From West50's new menu:

Chips - Russet potato, sea salt & malt vinegar

Beer Snacks - Maple & brown sugar, spiced garlic
Pickled Vegetables

Charcuterie - Chorizo, Portuguese blood sausage, saucisson sec, hunter sausage, quail & pear pate, guanciale.

Dearie Giveaway - CLOSED

I'm giving away THREE copies of Julia Child's biography

DEARIE: THE REMARKABLE LIFE OF JULIA CHILD

It’s rare for someone to emerge in America who can change our attitudes, our beliefs, and our very culture. It’s even rarer when that someone is a middle-aged, six-foot three-inch woman whose first exposure to an unsuspecting public is cooking an omelet on a hot plate on a local TV station.  And yet, that’s exactly what Julia Child did.  The warble-voiced doyenne of television cookery became an iconic cult figure and joyous rule-breaker as she touched off the food revolution that has gripped America for more than fifty years.

At its heart, Dearie is a story about a woman’s search for her own unique expression.  Julia Child was a directionless, gawky young woman who ran off halfway around the world to join a spy agency during World War II.  She eventually settled in Paris, where she learned to cook and collaborated on the writing of what would become Mastering the Art of French Cooking, a book that changed the food culture of America.   She was already fifty when The French Chef went on the air —  at a time in our history when women weren’t making those leaps.  Julia became the first educational TV star, virtually launching PBS as we know it today; her marriage to Paul Child formed a decades-long love story that was romantic, touching, and quite extraordinary.

A fearless, ambitious, supremely confident woman, Julia took on all the pretensions that embellished tony French cuisine and fricasseed them to a fare-thee-well, paving the way for everything that has happened since in American cooking, from TV dinners and Big Macs to sea urchin foam and the Food Channel.  Julia Child’s story, however, is more than the tale of a talented woman and her sumptuous craft.  It is also a saga of America’s coming of age and growing sophistication, from the Depression Era to the turbulent sixties and the excesses of the eighties to the greening of the American kitchen.  Julia had an effect on and was equally affected by the baby boom, the sexual revolution, and the start of the women’s liberation movement.

On the centenary of her birth, Julia finally gets the biography she richly deserves.  An in-depth, intimate narrative, full of fresh information and insights, Dearie is an entertaining, all-out adventure story of one of our most fascinating and beloved figures.

REVIEWS (from Amazon)

“It’s a revelation.” Time Magazine

“A rollicking biography that captures the vision, pluck and contagious exuberance that were the essence of Julia Child” People Magazine

“The most engaging celebrity biography we’ve read in years . . . Spitz manages to convey the vigor, curiosity, confidence and booming voice of a truly remarkable woman as if she is sitting at the kitchen table with you. . . Spitz is a fantastic writer.” – LA Weekly

“A much-appreciated, well timed gift to us all . . . Julia has never been more alive in the hearts and minds of those who grew up with her and drank her dreams.” – The Huffington Post

“In what is by far the most substantial new book on Child, Bob Spitz draws a lively, affectionately detailed portrait . . . [with] the kind of language, slangy and salty, that Child would have enjoyed and might have used herself.” – Wall Street Journal

“After wiping your drool off the page, you might wonder where Spitz uncovered such narrative gold . . . Author and subject almost become one, as Spitz channels the spirit of Child in his own words. . . His detailed research into mid-century American cooking helps us understand why exactly Child was such a big deal” – Washington Post

Rock Lobster

It has been a packed house every night at Rock Lobster ever since the 72-seat seafood restaurant opened late November / early December of last year. Chef and co-owner Matt Dean Pettit, who started Rock Lobster Food Co in 2011, has promptly graduated his small pop up company into a permanent location on Ossington merely nine months since its successful debut at the Toronto Underground Market (Pettit also had a lobster shack in Kensington Market last summer selling his very popular lobster rolls). This is truly impressive to say the least! And like I said earlier, it has been three months in and Rock Lobster is still rockin' it. With a no-reservation policy, be prepared to do a bit of waiting, that's my warning to ya ;)

Quick throwback! This was me with a 1.5 lb lobster at Lobstah Palooza last August, one of many sold-out events hosted by Rock Lobster Food Co. *Oh summer, I miss you sooo much!*

Even though is snowing right now, tomorrow is the first day of spring! *YAY!*

Anyway, back to Rock Lobster.

Adorned with cool paintings and murals (such as the one shown above, done by Pettit's father) and a rustic Canadiana feel to the space (which Pettit designed himself), it seems like Torontonians are loving everything Rock Lobster (Twitter: @RockLobsterFood, Facebook: Rock Lobster Food Co).

Rock Lobster's raw bar includes gulf shrimp, Atlantic snow crab, Nova Scotia lobster tail and oysters.

Bent

Last August, two of Susur Lee's sons, Kai and Levi Bent-Lee, opened Bent on the corner of Dundas and Markham (near Bathurst). Named after Susur's wife Brenda Bent (who designed Bent with business partner Karen Gable), the restaurant has the two sons managing the front of house while Susur (@susurlee) takes the reins in the kitchen (alongside chef de cuisine Bryan Gunness, formerly from Lee). Speaking of which, I've never been to Lee; I remember going to "Susur" once close to 10 years ago and "Madeline's" maybe twice before it closed in 2010. Yeah, there are no ifs, ands, or buts about it, I was thrilled about my dinner at Bent (Twitter: @BentRestaurant, Facebook: Bent Restaurant).

Lacquered wooden tables with long benches placed horizontally in a shiny, white-tiled room, Bent is quite a looker.

A very, very long sushi(?) bar.

You will find whimsical, childhood toys throughout Bent, like this mouse, for example, which I find rather creepy looking (the mirrored menu is very pretty though!)

Hawthorne Food and Drink

Chef Eric Wood (@chefericwood) and sous chef Binh An Nguyen (@_binhan_) teams up at Hawthorne Food and Drink (Twittter: @HawthorneTO, Facebook: Hawthorne Food and Drink), a 46-seat restaurant which opened its doors early December of last year. Located on Richmond St E., Hawthorne focuses on fusion - chef and general manager Eric Wood (former executive chef at Fabarnak) is all about bringing together the city's wide variety of ethnic flavours and incorporating them into his restaurant's ever-changing menu.

Not only is Hawthorne a restaurant, it is also affiliated with a non-profit training program for its front of house and back of house employees who wish to learn, gain experience, and improve their skills in the restaurant and/or hotel industry.

Ramen Raijin

It seems like Ramen Raijin (Twitter: @ramenRAIJIN, Facebook: Ramen Raijin) isn't getting much love from the Toronto ramen crowd. I don't necessarily have proof that it isn't - I just base this purely on what I hear from people around me, mainly individuals who frequent different ramen shops in downtown (not me) as well as those who seem more knowledgeable when it comes to what constitutes "authentic ramen" (not me either). So statistically speaking, my conclusion did not stem from a huge population at all, but after having more than a handful of people tell me stuff like this, it's hard to not get discouraged:

-"Raijin was the last place I tried because I heard it's the worst";
-"There's a reason why there's no line up at Raijin"; and
-"I liked Raijin the least out of all the ramen places in Toronto"

So no, I certainly did not have high hopes / expectations going into Raijin but surprise, surprise, after having lunch there a couple of weeks ago, I can say that I really liked Raijin, so much so that I am looking forward to going back soon.

Located at Yonge and Gerrard, Raijin opened in November of last year and is owned by Daiji Matsubara, who also owns the popular ramen shops Kintaro and Motomachi Shokudo in Vancouver. Raijin is known for its tonkotsu (pork bone), toridashi (clear chicken), and its bamboo charcoal black miso ramen.

Raijin is currently the largest ramen restaurant in downtown Toronto with seating up to 80 in its two dining rooms and bar. This really puts into perspective as to why there is no wait, right? Also a related note: people should appreciate the fact that Raijin is also large enough to accommodate people waiting for a table to be able to wait inside the restaurant, rather than forcing people to wait outside unlike the other ramen shops in Toronto. This is extremely important during winter months!

I really like Raijin's interior because it fully takes advantage of its 3,500 sq foot space. Unlike other tiny ramen shops where tables are lined up side by side with very minimal space in between, the seating at Raijin is incredibly roomy and comfortable.

A statue of Raijin, the Japanese god of thunder, in the front dining room.

JUST-EAT Giveaway - CLOSED

Don't Cook, JUST-EAT.

That pretty much sums up what I do on a daily basis!

An online food delivery service in Toronto, JUST-EAT.ca (Twitter: @justeatca, Facebook: Just Eat Canadais perfect for those days / nights when you don't feel eating out. I mean, you still gotta eat 'cause you're hungry but for whatever reason, you just don't feel like getting up from your comfy couch.  You wish that somehow food would just miraculously appear in front of you. I've been there, and I know you have too.

For me, the reason is sometimes weather related; my desire to eat out decreases drastically when it's really cold and /or if it's snowing outside. The thought of having to clean the snow off my car in the freezing cold and having to sit in a freezing cold car afterwards makes me cringe. Another reason would be the non-stop TV show marathons that I get myself into on the weekends. Oh I'm sure you know what I'm talking about, the ones where you spend 16+ hours in front of the TV on a Saturday, catching up on the entire season, and for the life of you cannot imagine "wasting" time to go cook or eat out? Yup. These are just a couple of reasons why I love JUST-EAT.ca 'cause when I'm in those situations, I feel like JUST-EAT.ca literally saved the day!

You may also relate to the "Don't Cook, Just-Eat" motto if you are a terrible cook:

Whatever your reason may be, I highly recommend you try out JUST-EAT.ca

I'm giving away THREE $50 vouchers for JUST-EAT.ca

HOW TO ENTER

1) You MUST be following me (@foodieyu) and JUST-EAT.ca (@justeatcaon Twitter;

AND

2) Tweet the following sentence exactly as shown, nothing before or after it

I don't want to cook, I want to JUST EAT #DontCookJustEatCA #foodjunkiegiveaway with @foodieyu @justeatca http://bit.ly/Yh6fv0

*You may tweet once a day for the duration of the contest (see below)*

Who the #$&@ is Gordon Oliver?

Gordon Oliver (@gordonoliverca) is apparently a self-proclaimed

"Celebrity Chef"

who will, on March 14 at 7:27PM, be on “Eat Talk” (a small cooking segment following CTV's eTalk, before Big Bang Theory). Apparently, Gordon Oliver will be cooking up a storm in his first ever TV appearance.

From his website www.gordonoliver.caGordon Oliver also brags that he is a

"Gourmet Canadian Chef with a knack for creating ridiculously delicious food."

Correct me if I'm wrong but none of this crap looks "delicious" to me. FAR FROM IT.

If anything they make me want to puke.

But who knows, you may think Gordon Oliver's Buffalo Wings Milkshake look appetizing *please no*. If that's the case, be my guest and check out his recipes, where you will also find recipes for a Salmon Chocolate Cake *gag* and Buffalo Wings Cupcakes *double gag*
